Visapur sits right opposite Lohagad and is higher and much larger, but sees a fraction of the crowd. In the monsoon the main path follows a stream bed of old stone steps, which is the reason most people come. It pairs well with Lohagad for a full day.
Our trips to Visapur Fort
We have been once in May 2024. Photos from the day:
6 photosHow to reach Visapur Fort from Pune
By car or bike: Take the old Mumbai–Pune highway to Malavli and drive towards Bhaje. Park at Bhaje village, where the path to Visapur starts.
By bus or train: Take a Pune–Lonavala local train to Malavli and walk through Bhaje village to the start of the trail (about 30 minutes).
The trail
Our community walks from Malavli station through Bhaje. The path climbs from Bhaje through fields and forest to the base of the fort walls, then up a rocky gully of old steps. In the monsoon a stream runs down these steps; it is fun but slippery, and it can run fast after heavy rain.
Once you are on top, the plateau is large. Allow an hour to walk around the walls, wells and Hanuman carvings.
To add Lohagad, descend towards the saddle between the two forts and climb up from Lohagadwadi.
What you will see
- A wide plateau, larger than Lohagad
- Old cannons, wells and a big Hanuman carving
- Monsoon streams pouring down the old steps
- Views straight across to Lohagad and Vinchu Kata
Food and water
There is little or nothing to buy on the fort. Buy water and snacks at Bhaje before you start, and carry 1.5–2 litres each.
Is it right for me?
Yes, if you’re fine with a longer walk than Lohagad. In the monsoon you will scramble up wet rock in a stream.
Best time to go: The monsoon (July–September) is the best-known time because of the streams, but turn back if the water is high. October to February is drier and easier.
Good to know
- Wear shoes with real grip; the monsoon gully is mostly wet rock.
- Do not cross or climb the stream section when the water is fast or rising.
- Carry water and food; there is little on top.
- Keep away from the wells and carry all wrappers back down; there is no clean-up service on the fort.
