Tung, also called Kathingad, is a sharp cone of rock standing over the Pawna lake. The climb from Tungwadi is short, but the last section is steep with exposed steps, so it feels more serious than its size. Many people combine it with a night at a Pawna lakeside campsite.
Our trips to Tung Fort
We have been once in Oct 2026. Photos from the day:
6 photosHow to reach Tung Fort from Pune
By car or bike: Drive towards Lonavala on the old Mumbai–Pune highway, turn off at Kamshet towards Pawna dam, and follow the road around the lake to Tungwadi.
By bus or train: There is no direct bus. Take a local train to Lonavala or Kamshet and hire a rickshaw or jeep to Tungwadi; one infrequent bus from Lonavala reaches Ghusalkhamb, about 8 km away.
The trail
From Tungwadi the path climbs steadily through grass and scrub to a Hanuman shrine and the first gateway.
Our group drove to Tungwadi in our own vehicles and took 45 minutes to an hour to reach the top.
The final part to the summit is a steep line of rock-cut steps with drops on the side. Go slowly, keep your hands free, and skip it in strong wind or heavy rain.
What you will see
- Pawna lake almost all the way around below you
- A small Ganesh temple on the summit
- Views of Tikona, Lohagad, Visapur and Korigad
Food and water
There is nothing on the fort. Carry at least a litre each; food is available in Tungwadi and at the Pawna campsites.
Is it right for me?
Short enough for beginners, but the last steps are steep with a drop on one side. Skip it if heights bother you.
Best time to go: Post-monsoon and winter are clearest. In peak monsoon the last steps are slippery and the summit is often in cloud.
Good to know
- The summit steps are exposed; turn back in strong wind or heavy rain.
- Wear shoes with dependable grip.
- Plan your ride back from Tungwadi before you go; there are few rickshaws.
- Keep the summit temple clean and do not leave anything on the hill. The lake shore below is often littered after camping weekends; carry yours home.
