November to February

K2S follows the ridge from Katraj ghat to Sinhagad, up and down roughly a dozen hills. It starts inside the city, needs no driving, and is famous as a full-moon night trek in winter. It is not technical, but it is long and relentless, and there is no water on the way.

Katraj to Sinhagad

How to reach Katraj to Sinhagad (K2S) from Pune

By car or bike: Get dropped at the old Katraj ghat road near the tunnel. At the end, walk down from Sinhagad to Atkarwadi, or take the ghat road down.

By bus or train: PMPML buses run to Katraj. From the end, buses run from Sinhagad paytha (Atkarwadi) back to Swargate.

The trail

The route follows the ridge west from Katraj, climbing and descending one hill after another. The trail is mostly clear, but there are side paths; carry a downloaded map.

The last climb is up to Sinhagad. If anyone is struggling earlier, several points on the ridge have paths down to villages and roads.

What you will see

  • A full-moon night on the ridge above the city lights
  • Sunrise from Sinhagad at the end
  • No driving: the trek starts in Pune

Food and water

There is no water on the ridge. Carry 3–4 litres each, plus food and electrolytes. Sinhagad has food stalls at the finish.

Is it right for me?

Only if you have done several day treks and can keep walking for 6–8 hours.

Best time to go: November to February. Summer is too hot and the monsoon makes the slopes slippery.

Good to know

  • Carry 3–4 litres of water each; there is none on the way.
  • Carry a headlamp with spare batteries and a downloaded map for night treks.
  • Agree on exit points in advance in case someone needs to stop.
  • The ridge is grassland that burns easily; never light fires or drop cigarette ends.
