Before you go: Local authorities have restricted or banned climbing Kalavantin during busy monsoon weekends in past years, and entry after dark has been barred at times. Ask at Thakurwadi or Prabal Machi before you climb.

Kalavantin Durg is a sharp pinnacle of rock with steps cut straight into its side, and they are steep, narrow and unprotected. Next to it, Prabalgad is a broad, forested plateau. Both start from Thakurwadi near Panvel and share Prabal Machi, the village halfway up.

The trail

From Thakurwadi a clear path climbs through forest to Prabal Machi, where villagers run small homestays and food stalls.

From the Machi, the path to Kalavantin reaches a col and then the rock-cut steps. They are steep, often crowded, have no railings and drop away on one side. Do not climb in rain, wind or a queue.

Prabalgad’s summit is a separate 1.5–2 hour climb from the Machi through forest. The Kala Buruj on its edge is a technical climb, not part of the walking route.

Fit groups can do both forts in one long day, as our community did in June 2024: start early, do Kalavantin first while the steps are quiet, then Prabalgad.

What you will see

  • The rock-cut staircase up Kalavantin
  • Views of Matheran, Irshalgad, Chanderi and the Panvel plain
  • Prabal Machi village and homestays
  • Prabalgad’s forested plateau

Food and water

Prabal Machi has stalls and homestays serving meals and water. Carry 2 litres for the climb.

Is it right for me?

Not for beginners or anyone afraid of heights. The steps up Kalavantin are steep with nothing to hold.

Best time to go: October to February. In the monsoon the steps are wet and the route is often closed or crowded.

Good to know

  • Do not climb Kalavantin in rain, high wind or a crowd on the steps.
  • Climb and descend facing the rock where the steps are steepest.
  • Plan to be off the steps well before dark.
  • Prabal Machi is a working village; ask before photographing people or homes, and use the stalls rather than leaving rubbish.
